History
Whernside Manor is around 300 years old and was extended in the 18th
century by the Sill family from Liverpool who wanted an elegant country
residence. A family of slave traders, they kept 25 slaves to work
the house and grounds.
Miles Mason, the famous English potter 1799 was born here and we have
examples of his work. Some research also suggests that the house and
its history formed the basis for Charlotte Bronte's Wuthering Heights.

We
have several ghosts including a grey lady who stands on the steps
of the garden and has been seen by many local residents over the years.
Secret passages and hidden wells are also a part of the Manor's history.
If this brief snapshot tickles your fancy, why not visit to find out
more? Our library contains numerous reference books and articles about
the history of the house and you are welcome to view them. |
